Benefits
Two separate trading systems form the basis of this service:
- General Trading System;
- Second-hand Textbook Trading System.
Either or both can be implemented into a school, and both can be tailored to your school's particular requirements.
At the heart of both systems, is an online classified ad service, specially designed to facilitate the trading of second-hand school items for both parents and schools.
- Parents and schools can easily trade and recycle any second-hand school item;
- Parents: become responsible for trading their second-hand items; receive a more convenient , comprehensive and effective service, and are happier;
- The Second-Hand Textbook Trading System is highly inclusive of parents, it provides greater access and more opportunity to trade and recycle second-hand textbooks compared to the traditional bookswap day;
- We will tailor our service to complement and extend your school's existing second-hand services, whislt helping to reduce your schools costs, dependence on volunteers and/or demands on staff time;
- We assist your school to gain additional funds through easily selling its own surplus, and to reduce waste;
- We provide significant funds to your school via our School Benefit Program;
- We provide parents with excellent telephone and email help lines;
- Very little work is required from the school to implement or maintain the service.
What can be Sold or Bought?
Parents and schools can sell or buy practically anything, but most of all anything that relates to:
- Education;
- Extra curricular activities and interests.

Membership Fee & what comes next after Submitting your details.
Kindergarten, Primary & Secondary School Membership is free.
Next, we will call to discuss your school's requirements. There are no strings or hidden costs.
The service has been designed for parents and students to easily trade and recycle their second-hand school items, as such they derive the value and benefit from the service and therefore pay for the service.
It is important the Sustainable School Shop provides access for all parents and students and no one is excluded, therefore parents and sudents can:
- Register and search the advertisements for free;
- List a single advertisement containing 2 items for $1.95;
- Purchase an Annual Family Membership for $19.95, allowing unlimited For Sale and Wanted Ads for a year covering all their children. This also provides access to the Second-hand Textbook Trading System.
Additionally,
- If there are no advertisements listed that are attached to your school, the first parent wishing to list an advertisement is offered a free Annual Family Membership;
- Member schools are provided with a number of Complimentary Annual Family Memberships for families that may appreciate some assistance from time to time.
Implementing either trading system is simple and easy, very little work is required from the school, but the school does need to talk to us so the system can be tailored to produce your school's parents, best outcomes.
Registering (Membership)
All Schools can register and join the Sustainable School Shop.
Registering is quick and easy:
- Complete the form found after clicking "Submit your contact details" button for schools;
- Click 'Submit';
- You will be contacted by one of our friendly staff to discuss your requirements;
- Next, if the school wishes to advertise items or simply track how the school's respective families are using the service, we register the school and activate its membership.
Our Site also enables multiple users (teachers and staff) from the one School:
- Primary Contact (Our contact for the School);
- Other Registered Contacts (Teachers and Staff).
Searching
Finding items on the Sustainable School Shop website is a breeze.
On the main Search Page you can utilise the text boxes to Search by:

Category;

Description;

Distance;
-
School;
-
'For Sale' or 'Wanted' advertisement.
Or simply enter the title or full description of the item you require into the Main Search Bar.

Within 'My Ads/Create an New Advertisement' on your School's homepage, as you describe your Ad, our system automatically searches the database and displays any matched results on the right hand side of the page. If there are no matched results for your item, then very simply you can list your Ad (either Wanted or For Sale) that you have just created.
Return To TopAdvertisement Matching Alerts
Our system automatically places a message on your Homepage if an item within it matches your "Wanted" Ad. The alert message is in real-time. An email adising of the match is also sent.
Wanted ads are the mirror image of For Sale ads and are equally important. By utilising a Wanted ad you can be amoungst the first to know an item has become available to purchase via our Advertisement Matching Alerts
For Members, the Sustainable School Shop removes the hard work of constantly searching, and saves you time.

Membership allows you to place as many advertisements over a year as you like. This is important as trading occurs year round and not just at the beginning or end of the school year.
Schools have the option within 'Create an Advertisement' to display your advertisement to only other Schools.
All Advertisements:
- Will be listed for 12 months;
- Can continue to be re-listed until the items are sold.
To place an advertisement you must already have registered on the Sustainable School Shop. After that you must:
- Log In
- Click ‘My Ads’ in the NavBar
- Click ‘Create a new Advertisement’
- Select ‘For Sale’ or ‘Wanted’
- Follow the prompts, more information the better
- Click ‘Finished’ or ‘Add Another Item’
- Check all details are correct and confirm your Ad by click on ‘List My Ad’
- Thats all - it’s that easy.
Placing ‘Wanted Ads is very important for those things you require, as our system will match-up items ‘For Sale’ to your ‘Wanted Ad’ and automatically notify you when they appear.
Within ‘My Ads’ you can Edit, Remove your Ad, Extend the expiry date, Unlist an Item within an Ad, Re-list your Ad, or View Ad history - its all very easy.

You determine the asking price for the item you wish to sell. What an appropriate price is will vary significantly across the categories, but as a rough guide:

New/Excellent condition 50-70 % new price

Good condition 30-50 % new price

Fair condition 20-30 % new price
Some items on the Sustainable School Shop may be given away to good causes such as Kindergartens, Hospitals etc, particulary if the item has little commercial value but may still be useful to others.
The only Fee charged by the Sustainable School Shop is our Membership Fee and we are not involved in the Sale/Purchase transaction.

School Details
Within your School Details only the Primary Contact can:
- Change your School and Primary Contact details;
- Change your School Password;
- Change the year levels your School provides;
- Add other users (Teachers and Staff) each with their own email address, password and editable user 'Profile'.

These points DO NOT apply to our unique system
- Parents feel uncomfortable trading with other parents;

- Parents won't have access to the system;

- Parents prefer the traditional book trade day;
- The system will take money away from the school;
- The system is expensive for parents.
What's involved for the school
- Advise parents of the changing arrangements;
- Provide reminders to parents within the schools newsletters;
- Include our Parent User Guide with the schools booklists;
- Place a link to the Sustainable School Shop on your school's website for parents to use.
We are available to visit the school and demonstrate the system, this usually takes approximately 30-45 minutes, normally involves lots of questions and answers. We have visited many schools, all have found it most worthwhile, also we use the visit to better understand the needs of your school community. We then tailor the implementation process and service to maximise parent and school outcomes, the service is not one that is simply imposed. We have found all schools are different.
Forums
The Sustainable School Shop has provided a Forum section for Schools to utilise if they wish. The Primary Contact at a School is the administrator who determines which staff (if any) are to access the site under a Schools Membership, and use features such as Forums.Forums are secure, with only Teachers and Staff who are authorised by the school as registered users able to use it or view it. Only Kindergartens, Pre-Schools, Primary & Secondary Schools have access to Forums.
Parents and other Organisations are not able to see, use or find the Forums section of the Sustainable School Shop. It is an exclusive tool for the above listed Schools.
Our 'All Schools' Forum was designed to be a simple tool for Teachers and Staff, to exchange ideas and network like never before, between Schools right across Australia.
We have provided 2 types of Forums:

The 'All Schools' Forum, connecting all Schools across Australia;
- A Forum for your own Schools use internally.

Notices
Schools can write and post a notice on their parents homepage. It will appear the next time a parent logs in to their homepage.
It is very easy to use and the notice is sent to all parents/guardians from your School who are members of the Sustainable School Shop.
Parents are able to search all past notices, but only for their respective School.
